Does Juneau need a new Terminal?
The Juneau terminal has served hundreds of thousands of passengers over the past fifty
years. During that time many additions and renovations have been made to update and improve
the facility to meet the needs of passengers and changes in the aviation industry. Yet
no substantial changes have been made since 1984 to the terminal, while passenger needs
have changed dramatically and the industry as a whole has changed as well.
Juneau does not need an entirely new terminal. Much of the existing 80,000 square feet
can continue to serve the traveling public for many years. However, portions of the building
have exceeded their expected life cycle in terms of operation and maintenance. Those
portions may need to be replaced or substantially renovated.
Overall, the terminal needs a variety of improvements to address changes, from how passengers
check in for flights to increased space for circulation and queues. The baggage claim is deficient
and needs to be expanded. There need to be concessions beyond security and the entire security
screening area is undersized and inflexible for change.
